The Rams won the 1951 NFL championship with Norm Van Brocklin and Bob Water field sharing the quarterback duties and throwing to receivers Tom Fears and Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch. Splitting quarterbacking chores usually means a team doesn't have a good quarterback. However, in this case it meant the Rams had two. Fears and Hirsch were two of the best receivers in the league, with Hirsch gaining the nickname because of his unusual running style. The Rams remained a winning team until the mid-1950s and then struggled for 10 years. However, they came of age in 1966 with an offense led by quarterback Roman Gabriel and running back Dick Bass and a defense led by perhaps the most ferocious front four in NFL history. The Fearsome Foursome consisted of David "Deacon" Jones, Merlin Olsen, Roger Brown and Lamar Lundy. Jones and Olsen was Hall of Famers who lived to sack the quarterback. Jones was a snarling, intimidating player and Olsen was something of a nice guy off the field, but both were ferocious. recently, the Saint Louis Rams football jerseys are on hot sale at our online shop.
The Rams went to their first Super Bowl after the 1979 season. They won the NFC West with an ordinary 9-7 record, but upset the Cowboys and Bucs on the road and played the Steelers in Super Bowl XIV. The Steelers had a formidable team and were heavy favorites, but the Rams took charge early behind the passing of Vince Ferragamo and the running of Wendell Tyler. However, the high-powered Steelers took over and recorded a 31-19 win.
The Rams dominated West Coast football for years, but that came to an end in the 1980s as the 49ers became the dominant team in football. The Rams lost 30 of 37 games to their archrivals over an 18-year stretch. The Rams left Los Angeles for St. Louis in 1995. They developed a high-powered passing attack in 1999 and won their first Super Bowl title by beating the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV. In addition to accurate passing by Kurt Warner and fine receiving by Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, along with the great all-around play of running back Marshall Faulk, they got a lift from the coaching of Dick Vermeil.
